Omar AbdiHamid: End of a 2-day preceptorship on the most lethal cancer in the region
Omar AbdiHamid, Clinical Oncology Specialist at HCGCCK Cancer Centre, recently posted on LinkedIn:
“End of a 2-day preceptorship on the most lethal cancer in the region (Cancer of the food pipe ) organized by ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology. Lovely connecting with colleagues from Africa and beyond. It was intriguing to see how the huge unmet needs and gaps in cancer care leads to late presentation and sub-optimal treatment of this debilitating cancer in many countries in Africa.
Key Takeaways and Action Plans:
– African countries need to prioritize cancer care delivery and resource mobilizations,
– Cancer care in Africa is heterogeneous with some countries completely lacking infrastructure such as radiotherapy machines,
– Oncologists in Africa work with tools and means available to them, representing the overall picture of the resilient community in the face of all these shortages.”
