Laura Vater: This is how compassion is taught
Laura Vater, Gastrointestinal Oncologist at the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared the following on X:
“One morning in my training, a patient was in excruciating pain during rounds.
As we waited for the medication, my attending squatted by the man’s bed, reached for his hand, & offered words of comfort. I found myself mimicking her, perched down.
This is how compassion is taught.”
