UF Health Cancer Center Welcomed Nearly 150 Middle and High School Science Teachers From Across the Southeast

UF Health Cancer Center shared on LinkedIn:

“At our annual Cancer Research Conference for Science Teachers this summer, we welcomed nearly 150 middle and high school science teachers from across the Southeast to learn the very latest in cancer research and gain hands-on science skills.

Ten lectures taught by University of Florida faculty and trainees covered the full spectrum of cancer, from breast cancer therapies, to protecting astronauts from space radiation, to nutrition and the microbiome to enhance cancer therapy.

A very special thanks to our incredible UF grad students who led two hands-on workshops! In one workshop, teachers analyzed cancer samples, unraveling the genetic clues behind tumor development. In another, teachers learned how bacterial genetic manipulation techniques can be applied to understanding and targeting cancer.

Teachers also toured our state-of-the-art lab facilities, seeing the latest technology that’s driving cancer research.

The free conference aims to build relationships with educators and spark a dialogue about community health and well-being. Teachers are the gateway to the next generation of scientists, and the future is definitely bright.

We’re grateful to all the educators who participated for sharing their energy and perspectives as we work together to reduce the cancer burden.

Special thanks to AstraZeneca for its generous sponsorship of the conference!
