“At any given time, we are all on many teams.
We are members of our company’s leadership team, our department team, our profession’s broader community—and of course, our families, friendships, and personal networks. One of the most underappreciated leadership skills is the ability to consciously toggle between these teams—to know which team you are representing in any given moment, and to shift your mindset accordingly.
A decision that serves your functional team may not serve the broader enterprise. Leaders are constantly asking themselves: Whose interests am I representing right now? Am I showing up for the right team in this moment? The clarity to make these choices—consciously, not accidentally—is what separates good from great. It’s not easy. But it’s the work.”
