Runcie C.W. Chidebe Discusses HPV Vaccine Access and Innovation at ASCO

Runcie C.W. Chidebe, Executive Director of Project PINK BLUE, posted on LinkedIn:

“The volume of vaccines needed by Nigeria to eliminate cervical cancer is almost the same volume needed by over three European countries. In specific, over 50 million+ girls and women are at risk of HPV infection and cervical cancer, however, we have only vaccinated 12million. In my estimation, this is a huge progress.

Thanks to our advocacies (I remember when I was always tweeting at our vice president Prof. Yemi Osinbajo reminding him of his promise to Nigerian girls).

Now, just imagine that many African countries are producing our own HPV vaccines and many other medicines in the region. It may not necessarily reduce the cost of the vaccines but we agreed that it has a a lot benefit for the region in terms of economic development, scientific growth, capacity building and continental progress.

This is what Miriam Mutebi, the President of AORTIC- Africa, Giulia Segafredo, the NCDs Access Manager at Medicines Patent Pool and I discussed for almost an hour.

It was almost as if we were having a panel discussion at Project PINK BLUE ‘s exhibition booth. So excited that our booth served as both a point of connection, collaboration and a stage for discussions on global oncology.

We had a very fruitful and productive conversation on access to patents for vaccines and other medicines globally and why patent matters for Africa.

Fantastic conversations. This should be a panel at the AORTIC or 2025 Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), World Cancer Leaders Summit.
