Robert Califf: A conversation with Lisa Dwyer about the U.S. FDA’s role in digital health

Robert Califf, Commissioner at US Food and Drug Administration, recently posted on X/Twitter:

“Appreciated the opportunity to have a conversation with Lisa Dwyer at CES2024 yesterday about the U.S. FDA’s role in digital health.

We could see it coming during my first term as Commissioner and, sure enough, the combination of digitization, data analytics, and AI give digital health technologies valuable opportunities to improve individual and public health.

Our Digital Health Center of Excellence is doing a phenomenal job working through a number of emerging and complex questions in this area. It’s critical we continue collaborating with the growing community as we navigate these new frontiers in health and technology.

One of the most important issues is to develop approaches to enable complete follow-up of people so that algorithms can be tuned throughout the lifecycle of the technology and algorithm.

It’s also important to continue to evaluate the algorithms for bias with regard to social determinants of health.

One of the more interesting uses of AI should be to expose bias in the health system that’s underlying inferior health outcomes in the US compared with other high-income countries.

As we move forward in this area, ensuring all consumers/patients can access these technologies to boost their health to increase length and quality of life, and we find ways the data generated can improve the healthcare system and inform patient care.”
