Svetlana Nikic on Cervical Cancer awareness month

“January – Cervical Cancer awareness month.
Did you know that cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide?
In Europe around 68.000 new cases were detected in 2020 and approximately 27.000 deaths caused by it. This means that in spite of great progress with regards to prevention, earlier detection and more effective treatments, the 5-year survival is still around 67%. This means that out of 100 women detected with cervical cancer, 33 will die of the disease, which still shows that there’s room for improvement.
The majority of cervical cancer cases (around 85%) occur in developed countries, with Human papillomavirus (HPV) being a primary cause of this type of cancer.
Regular screening with Pap tests (or HPV tests) can detect precancerous abnormalities, allowing for early treatment, and vaccination against HPV can help prevent cervical cancer.
So with that in mind remind your female family members, friends and have open discussions about this especially with young girls. Remind them of the importance of:
– scheduling regular check-ups with their gynecologist
– Have open discussions about sexual health and cervical cancer prevention
– Inform young women about the risks of HPV infection and how vaccination can help.
Thank you for helping me in creating awareness around this!!”
