Nwamaka Lasebikan: Redefining Research Leadership in Africa with SINCCAR
Nwamaka Lasebikan, Director of Research and Innovation at the Nigerian Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Redefining Research Leadership in Africa with SINCCAR.
At the heart of meaningful change is the courage to imagine a better future—and the competence to build it.
Under the esteemed leadership of DG National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment, Usman Aliyu, I am proud to have spearheaded one of the most transformative national initiatives in Nigeria’s cancer response:
The SINCCAR Project – Strengthening Institutional Capacity for Cancer Research and Implementation. The recent completion of the second phase of the SINCCAR project across Nigeria’s 6 regions marks a significant milestone.
For us, this is more than a project—it’s a strategic blueprint to revolutionize how cancer research is conducted, translated, and embedded into the heart of our health system. We’re not just filling gaps. We are building resilient systems and sustainable innovation ecosystems that can transform cancer care across the continent..
Our initiatives include:
- Institutional Revamp: Enhancing cancer research frameworks and governance nationwide.
- Skill Enhancement: Nurturing a new cadre of cancer researchers blending local insights with global standards.
- Indigenous Ingenuity: Supporting locally-driven research that addresses critical public health queries.
- Impact Fusion: Connecting research outcomes with policies to drive tangible improvements.
Why does this matter:
For too long, the African research ecosystem has been reactive, underfunded, and disconnected from real-world impact. SINCCAR changes that narrative by investing in sustainable capacity and enabling evidence-led decisions at every level—from community care to national cancer policy.
I am deeply honored to lead this work with vision, strategy, and conviction. It is my mission to ensure that the future of cancer research in Nigeria is homegrown, data-driven, and globally competitive.
Acknowledging the exceptional leadership of our regional coordinators: Aisha Mustapha, Dr. Aruah Simeon Chinedu, Professor Danladi Adamu Bojude, EMMANUEL EZEOME , Nneka Iloanusi, Olusegun Biyi-Olutunde and Olusegun Alatise .
Special gratitude to the dedicated team at the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment: Ohemu john, Seember Sandra Aondoaver , Ugbala Jennifer Ezinne, Sarafadeen Arisegi, Stephen Ojukwu , Chinyere Okafor and Maryam Ismail-Olarere.
At every site we visited, the enthusiasm and engagement of both the Faculty and participants were truly outstanding.
If you believe in equitable cancer care, context-responsive research, and sustainable systems—this is your call to action.
Let’s co-create the future.
