Jayasree Iyer: The Access to Medicine Foundation reflects on a year marked by significant achievements
Jayasree Iyer, CEO of the Access to Medicine Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“As we draw the curtain on 2023, the Access to Medicine Foundation reflects on a year marked by significant achievements. From launching the first-of-its-kind analytical framework for generic and biosimilar medicine manufacturers that was put to use for the first time this fall, to publishing a report from our AMR programme about whether companies have seized opportunities identified in our 2021 AMR Benchmark, the challenge of unequal access in low- and middle- income countries drove the direction of this work.
Looking ahead, our focus remains on addressing this fundamental issue, including the launch of the 9th edition of the Access to Medicine Index which has been the longest-running independent assessment of the pharmaceutical industry’s actions to improve access to medicine in LMICs since 2008.
With billions of people still lacking access to medicine globally – further compounded by climate change, conflicts, and rising costs affecting livelihood and healthcare – the need is urgent. In our work we actively encourage all key players, including investors, policymakers, and companies, to collaborate with us. I continue to call for these players to join us in guiding and stimulating essential health sectors towards closing these equity gaps so that all people regardless of where they live have access to the essential medicines they need.”
