Tracey O’Brien: BreastScreen NSW will use new technology to begin informing women about their breast density
Tracey O’Brien, NSW Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of the Cancer Institute NSW, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Knowledge is power when it comes to our health and that’s why I am pleased to share that by the end of the month, BreastScreen NSW will use new technology to begin informing women about their breast density.
Breast density is common and normal, with around 40 per cent of women of screening age in NSW having some level of dense breast tissue. While it doesn’t mean a woman will go on to be diagnosed with breast cancer, extremely dense breasts can reduce the visibility of cancers on a mammogram and is one of several risk factors for the disease.
We hope that by providing women with an understanding of their breast density, they will have the information they need to make informed decisions about their health, with guidance from their doctor.
Everyone’s circumstance are unique, but what we do know, is that a regular breast screen is still the best way to detect breast cancer early – even for women with extremely dense breasts.
If you’re of screening age, don’t put off your breast screen, book it in today.
