Olubukola Ayodele: The urgent need to tackle cancer health disparities
Olubukola Ayodele, Consultant Medical Oncologist at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Part 2 of my insightful conversation with John McGrane and Michael Rowe about the urgent need to tackle cancer health disparities is now available.
In this episode, we dive into the concrete, actionable steps that individuals, as well as institutions and organisations, can undertake to help mitigate the profound inequities prevalent in our healthcare system.
I introduced the vital concept of ‘Cultural Competency,’ emphasizing its critical role in enabling health professionals to engage thoughtfully and empathetically with patients on the complex and often difficult subject of cancer.
We also highlighted a significant concern: many clinical trial eligibility criteria inadvertently exclude Black patients. This exclusion often stems from a lack of awareness regarding the biological variations in blood test results such as neutrophil count, which can lead to disparities in treatment opportunities and outcomes.
We must rethink our approach and actively implement the necessary, gradual changes in both practice and education that will make healthcare more inclusive and accessible to all individuals, regardless of their background.
I’m grateful to Simply Oncology for the opportunity to bring awareness and solutions to cancer inequities.”
