Douglas Flora: 5 ways you can make a difference for cancer patients this week
Douglas Flora, Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services at St. Elizabeth Healthcare and ACCC President-Elect, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“What’ve i done to help? Four words to add direction to your coming week.
I’m embarrassingly easy prey for marketers in my social feeds. My latest purchase? A banner with this question hanging in my office, inspired by a Jason Isbell lyric – a simple call to action for me and visitors. Because today, over 5,000 Americans will hear: ‘You have cancer.’
While we race through emails and meetings, these 5,000 people face a terrifying new reality. This isn’t abstract for me. I’ve watched loved ones navigate this journey. Small acts of kindness became their lifelines during dark moments.
Here are 5 ways you can make a difference for cancer patients this week:
- Donate blood— Cancer treatments depend on transfusions.
- Make a small donation to a cancer-focused charity.
- Volunteer at a local cancer center.
- Send a care package— Practical items make a difference.
- Offer transportation to appointments.
The difference one person makes is real. I’ve seen it. Today, I’ll ask you the same question my banner asks me: What’ve you done to help?
Share one action you’re committing to this week, or how someone’s help made a difference during a difficult time in your life. Together, we can make a meaningful dent in suffering.”
