Sendurai Mani: The transition from postdoc to assistant professor – A unique leadership journey

Sendurai Mani, Professor of Medicine at Brown University, shared on LinkedIn:

“The transition from postdoc to assistant professor: A unique leadership journey

Starting a lab as an assistant professor after completing a postdoctoral fellowship is a significant challenge. During their postdoc years, many scientists refine their skills in critical thinking and academic writing, becoming adept at crafting papers and grant proposals. Yet, transitioning to a faculty position brings an entirely new array of challenges and responsibilities.

In addition to thinking and writing, a faculty member is responsible for effectively managing startup funds, which includes hiring a balanced mix of good PhD students, postdocs, and other researchers. The role goes beyond team assembly; it also involves fostering their growth into successful scientists. This entails providing support to high achievers while also identifying and addressing the challenges faced by those who may be struggling, guiding them toward success.

Moreover, the logistical side of running a lab demands meticulous financial planning to ensure every team member is compensated for their hard work. In addition to these managerial duties, faculty members are expected to continue contributing to their fields through reviewing papers and grants, among other tasks – all without the benefit of additional training or compensation for these new roles.

This transition is a testament to the adaptability and resilience inherent in great leaders within academia. For those who have walked this path, what were your biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?
