“Interesting proof of concept study from Italian team, showing that early diagnosis of high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) is double from DNA specimens obtained from Papanicolau tests. This retrospective analysis demonstrated that early detection (even several years prior of diagnosis) of HGSOC is doable by examining genome wide copy number aberration patterns using shallow whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis.
Larger and prospective studies are needed to validate the findings of this study, but it certainly is a promising data, knowing that HGSOC is one of the gynaecological malignancies with the highest mortality rate (more than 70% of patients diagnosed with HGSOC die within 5 years from diagnosis).”
