Elen Baloyan: Key takeaways from the Global Summit on War and Cancer

Elen Baloyan, Medical Oncology Fellow at the Yeolyan Hematology and Oncology Center and the Managing Editor of OncoDaily, shared on LinkedIn:

“Our Global Summit on War and Cancer, hosted by OncoDaily and the The Institute of Cancer and Crisis (ICC) has concluded!
We were grateful to have so many influential healthcare professionals to share their insights on this prominent topic.

Here is a brief recap of this 3-day virtual event:

Day 1: Illuminating speeches by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, HRH Princess Dina Mired of Jordan, and OncoDaily ‘s Editor-in-Chief Dr. Gevorg Tamamyan.

Key takeaway: Through attention to inclusion and action.

When a decision is being made about a party, that party should be actively involved in that decision making process. Whether it’s clinical trials or health care funding or else global approach is crucial to overcome disparities and provide the best care possible – individualized for each region, country, ethnic group and an individual.

Day 2:

Key takeaway: Behind each number are individual lives.

An individual life can be affected by an individual activist. From pediatric cancer care in war-affected regions to fragile settings of drug regulations we need advocacy and presence to amplify the voices of those affected and harmed by war.

Day 3: Closing remarks from CEO of The Institute of Cancer and Crisis (ICC) Jemma Arakelyan.

Key takeaway: Persistency matters.

Results take time and effort. Balancing global influence with local impact requires dedication and fairness from both ends.

We need to keep in mind that while some patients and doctors are looking for statistical changes in trials to improve treatment outcomes, there are still areas where people with cancer do not have any access to any kind of treatment – whether it’s for cancer or a community acquired pneumonia. This is not okay. And perhaps this issue remains as one of the main challenges to be addressed in future events.
