“Addressing Europe’s Health Care Workforce Crisis.
Yesterday, I had the privilege of co-hosting an important discussion in the European Parliament alongside MEP Tilly Metz, bringing together key voices from across Europe to tackle the growing shortage of doctors and healthcare professionals. With 1.6 million workers already missing from our healthcare systems—and projections showing this could rise to 4 million by 2030—we cannot afford to stand by.
Our discussions reinforced a clear message: we need EU-wide coordination to improve working conditions, retention strategies, and cross-border cooperation to ensure sustainable healthcare for all.
This is why I strongly support the upcoming INI report on an EU Health Workforce Crisis Plan, which will set out concrete actions to safeguard the future of healthcare employment and working conditions across Europe.
A heartfelt thank you to the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME) Doctors for their invaluable role in organizing this event, and to all our expert panelists, including representatives from the Medical Associations of Malta, Ireland, Bulgaria, the UK, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and France.
