Art has the power to transform how we understand illness – PCAC

Patient Caregiver Artist Coalition (PCAC) shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Art has the power to transform how we understand illness.

We are proud to spotlight A(I) Brighter Tomorrow: Cancer and Beyond, a groundbreaking exhibition at the Gallery of ARTFul Medicine at Montefiore Einstein. This exhibition brings together artists, doctors, and cancer survivors to explore the human side of the cancer journey—focusing on themes like fertility loss, caregiving, and the emotional reality of living with illness.

Exhibition Highlights:

  • “Return to Life: In and Out of the Body” by Suzanne Anker, developed under the scientific guidance of Heather Feil at Montefiore’s Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Health Montefiore Health System, explores onco-fertility through parallels between nature’s cycles and the preservation of life.
  • “Burden of Concealment: The Diagnosed, The Caregiver, and Their Son” by Anna Rathkopf and Jordan Rathkopf The Rathkopfs draws on their personal experiences as a patient and caregiver.
  • “Physic AI Garden” by Anna Dumitriu and Alex May integrates artificial intelligence to highlight health challenges from cancer treatment while exploring potential AI-driven solutions.
  • “T(H)UMOR: Dear Cancer Diary” by Federico Muelas transforms real-life cancer survivor stories from Montefiore’s Bronx Oncology Living Daily (BOLD Buddies) program into comic art.
  • Romanian-based Dr. Sabina Șucuri, a radiation oncologist, and photographer Vladimir Gheorghiu collaborated on a poignant concept using light and shadow to explore survivorship. Their work includes a moving visual interview with the mother of a young boy who passed away in 2023 after 13 years of resilience.

Why bring art into hospitals? Because stories change lives.

“Art has the ability to teach and communicate, making it increasingly valuable in healthcare settings. In environments where oncology patients can feel powerless, this exhibition emphasizes the importance of human connections that support physical, mental, and emotional healing.”— Jodi Moise, Director of the Fine Art Program and Collection at Montefiore Einstein.

“This exhibition bridges my passions for art and medicine, creating a human connection between two worlds that shape how we heal, understand, and imagine brighter tomorrows.” — Maria Natalia Marin, an independent art curator and medical student based in Bucharest, Romania.

Co-curated by Natalia Marin and Jodi Moise, this exhibition aligns with PCAC’s mission to create a world where patient and caregiver voices are centered, heard, and valued.
