Stay Healthy for you and Your Mob: Yeena’s Story
Tracey O’Brien, NSW Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of the Cancer Institute NSW, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today is International Women’s Day. While we often use it to celebrate the incredible contribution of researchers and clinicians in reducing the impact of cancer (and rightly so), what moves me beyond measure, is the passion of women who are using their own cancer journey to support others.
What is common amongst the many women with cancer that I have been privileged to meet, is their unwavering passion and drive to make a difference. The hope that their experience may help shape a better future for countless others.
Whether it be through advocacy, fundraising, or simply by sharing their stories, their voices and actions do make a difference. In cancer control, we simply could not do it without them.
One of these incredible women is Yeena Thompson. A proud Gamilaraay woman, Yeena was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 48. She recently shared her story with the Cancer Institute NSW and hopes to break down barriers and encourage other Aboriginal women to put their health first.
It is the journey, work and achievements of women like Yeena that I celebrate and acknowledge this International Women’s Day.
