When working with individuals navigating cancer, exercise can feel overwhelming. Fatigue, treatment side effects, and the fear of doing ‘too much’ often create barriers. But what if we started not with structured exercise—but with simply reducing inactivity?

Prolonged sitting isn’t just about comfort; it’s an unhealthy habit that increases fatigue, contributes to greater loss of muscle and has negative mental health impacts.

Encouraging small, manageable movement snacks—like standing between appointments, walking while on the phone, or stretching during treatment waiting times—can make a real impact.

That’s why this AICR blog, “Sitting Too Much? Easy Movement Snacks to Keep You Active,” is such an important reminder for clinicians

  • Small changes add up.
  • Reducing sedentary time is a gateway to movement.
  • This approach meets patients where they are.

Instead of prescribing 150 minutes of exercise right away, what if we started with sitting less? A small shift that’s both achievable and empowering. Don’t forget if you need a quick resource, the Shift YouTube channel puts out a new 5 min workout every Friday!

Healthcare professionals—how do you approach movement with your patients? Let’s start the conversation on making movement more accessible in oncology care.”
