Kerry St. Pierre: My thoughts on JAMA’s latest article on the Mediterranean Diet and Obesity
Kerry St. Pierre, Adjunct Professor at
“Thank you Lisa Rapaport and Everyday Health for including my thoughts on JAMA’s latest article on the Mediterranean Diet and Obesity-Linked Cancer Risk.
Based on the findings of the JAMA study, it appears that improvements to overall metabolic health including reductions in chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, put the body in a better position to fight cancer even if a calorie deficit is not present.
Shifting saturated fats to poly- and mono- unsaturated fats and refined carbohydrates to complex ones may not reduce the total number of calories consumed enough to produce weight loss, however it appears that this improvement in diet quality is sufficient to produce a chemoprotective benefit.
Everyday Health article.
JAMA article.”
