Gabriel Due: Inspiring local action against cancer – the efforts of NiMSA SCOPH
Gabriel Due, National Director of the Standing Committee on Public Health at Nigerian Medical Students’ Association (NiMSA), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“INSPIRING LOCAL ACTION AGAINST CANCER: THE UNWAVERING EFFORTS OF NiMSA SCOPH.
Since assumption of Office on the 1st of January 2025, my team and I have made concerted efforts to fight against Cancer in Nigeria.
From Staging a 7-day Online Cervical Cancer Awareness Campaign in January, we moved to commemorate World Cancer Day with impactful content that benefited over 2,000 people.
All these are with a specific goal: To contribute to cancer awareness in Nigeria.
However, our partnership with Sinai Development and Support Initiative (SDSI) to commemorate International Childhood Cancer Day has remained one of the most remarkable efforts in the fight against Cancer in Nigeria.
To commemorate the ICCD 2025, we held two impactful events.
1. Cancer Road walk: We raised awareness and sensitized people about childhood cancers.
2. Cancer Seminar: We increased advocacy for childhood cancers and solicited support for their treatment.
We received a wonderful turnout from all professionals, including Doctors, Nurses, Lawyers, Journalists, and Students. We also had in our midst some prominent medical professionals.
- Dr. Stephen Terungwa Hwande, Chief Medical Director, Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH)
- Prof.EDWIN ESEIGBE, President of Neurology Child Society of Nigeria.
- Prof. Audu Onyemocho , Director Institute of Global Health and Health Security, FUHSO
- Dr. samuel otene , Interim Chairman of Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS), Benue State.
- Dr.Patience Okpeh , President of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Benue State.
- Dr. Abdallah Ramatuh, HOD, Department of Pediatrics, BSUTH.
This has been one of the most touching events of my life. From the Organization down to the ceremony, I was moved by the support I received from Stakeholders and Organizations.
At the Seminar, I was moved to tears listening to the stories of cancer patients and their caregivers. What I learned was that cancer treatment is poorly funded, and those who suffer from it cannot bear the financial burden alone.
May we continue to make our efforts, however little, to prevent the spread of cancer and support treatment for cancer patients in Nigeria and beyond.”
