Wafaa M Rashed: Access to medicine is just one piece of the puzzle
Wafaa M Rashed, Faculty Lecturer of pharmacy at Ahram Canadian University, reshared a post by United Nations Office at Geneva on LinkedIn, adding:
“No child with cancer should die because they lack access to life-saving medicines. But access to medicine is just one piece of the puzzle.
I truly appreciate WHO & St. Jude’s initiative—it is a critical step forward in addressing global disparities.
But to end this injustice, we need:
- Sustainable funding to ensure ongoing research & innovation for childhood cancer treatment.
- More research to develop child-specific therapies, not just adaptations of adult treatments.
- Policy change to make childhood cancer a global health priority—not just an initiative.
- Equity in early diagnosis & access to comprehensive care
Medicines save lives, but without sustained investment in research, policy, and funding, we will continue fighting the same battle year after year.
Will the United Nations take the next step and host a dedicated session on childhood cancer?
We need more than short-term initiatives—we need a global commitment.

Quoting United Nations Office at Geneva‘s post:
“No child with cancer should die because they lack access to life-saving medicines.
Ahead of the International Childhood Cancer Day, World Health Organization and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – ALSAC have launched a global movement to provide children with cancer the medicines they need, regardless of where they live or their ability to pay.”
