Cancer affects everyone, but it doesn’t affect everyone equally – ACS CAN

American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) posted on LinkedIn:

“For our February Volunteer Spotlight, we’re thrilled to highlight Roberta Albany, Vice State Lead Ambassador for ACS CAN Pennsylvania and active member of ACS CAN’s Black Volunteer Caucus. Roberta is a Breast Cancer survivor who is passionate about giving back to ACS and ACS CAN because during her cancer experience, she was afforded the opportunity to stay at an ACS Hope Lodge.

Roberta is also an ambassador for ACS’s VOICES of Black Women, working to share information about the study to help reach the goal of enrolling 100,000 Black women in the U.S. to better understand cancer risks and outcomes among this demographic. Roberta routinely posts about VOICES on her social media channels and works within her community to spread the word.

Along with her ACS CAN Pennsylvania volunteers, Roberta is advocating to pass state-wide legislation to increase access to Prostate Cancer screening for individuals who are above the age of 40 and at high-risk of the disease. Black men are 70% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than White men. ‘By breaking down cost barriers, we can help ensure that high-risk individuals, including Black men, access the necessary early detection screenings, leading to better treatment outcomes.’

We know that cancer affects everyone, but it doesn’t affect everyone equally. Roberta’s commitment to Health Equity is incredibly important, and we’re lucky to have her as a longtime volunteer!”
