Miriam Mutebi: Female Leadership in Surgery – a topic that’s been long overdue

Miriam Mutebi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital, posted on LinkedIn:

“Last week, I was honored to witness two incredible Pan African Women Association of Surgeons (PAWAS) members, Dr. Marcella D C Biyouma and Dr. Horline Bongoue, take center stage at the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) Meeting.

They led a crucial conversation on Female Leadership in Surgery – a topic that’s been long overdue. The room was teaming with allies, and a vibrant discussion was held by all surgeons present, about the role of African women in surgery.

Key take homes:

1 – There is a incredible potential (and urgent need) to expand the role of women in surgery in Africa
2 – Support is essential and needs to be intentional in helping to build (and retain) a robust and diverse continental surgical workforce – more on these deliberations later.

While Surgery has historically been a male-dominated field, across Africa, women are stepping up, leading groundbreaking research, and shaping the future of surgical care.

However, challenges persist – from underrepresentation to limited mentorship, funding gaps, and fewer leadership opportunities.

This is where PAWAS comes in.

A growing network of African women surgeons committed to mentorship, surgical excellence, and amplifying the voices of women in surgery and research.

By creating spaces for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and advocacy, PAWAS ensures that the next generation of women surgeons not only belongs – but leads.

Let’s continue breaking barriers and shaping the future of surgical excellence – together.”
