Neil Ranasinghe: 3 reasons why International Childhood Cancer Day is important
Neil Ranasinghe, Lead Technical Author at London Stock Exchange, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Yesterday was International Childhood Cancer Day, here are 3 reasons why this is an important day.
- The cure rate for children with cancer is around 90% in high-income countries, that still means 1 in 10 children die from cancer. This is far too high.
- Many many survivors of childhood cancer have serious side effects for years, if not decades. We need to develop less harmful treatments.
- The situation outside high-income countries is very different. The cure rate is a fraction of what is in the UK.
Treatment abandonment is also a huge problem (this is where treatment doesn’t start or isn’t finished). We need to be providing more support to clinicians and researchers across the world.
Here is small selection of the many organisations and individuals doing a great job in this area.”
