Wafaa Rashed: Fifth Cohort of the Policy Advocacy in Genetics and Genomics
Wafaa Rashed, Chair and Founder of PAPERI, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Fifth Cohort of the Policy Advocacy in Genetics and Genomics!
We are thrilled to announce the Fifth Cohort of the Policy Advocacy in Genetics and Genomics course, a flagship initiative of the Pan-African PGS Education and Research Initiative (PAPERI)!
This program brings together a diverse and dynamic group of participants from across Africa, equipping them with knowledge in genetics, genomics, and policy advocacy to drive impactful change in their home countries.
One of the highlights of this cohort is the highly anticipated debate session, where participants will critically engage with pressing issues at the intersection of science, society, and policy.
Debate Topics:
- Should genetic editing (e.g., CRISPR) be allowed for non-therapeutic enhancements?
- Is it ethical to use genetic information in criminal investigations and forensics in African countries?
- Should genetic testing be a mandatory part of pre-marital screening to prevent hereditary diseases in African countries?
- Should universities in Africa introduce mandatory courses on genomics and bioethics for students in healthcare and life sciences?
- Should governments prioritize funding genetic research to develop climate-resilient crops over other agricultural innovations?
- Should national healthcare systems in Africa fund genetic testing for rare inherited disorders despite their low prevalence?
- Should traditional medicine and healers be formally integrated into genomic healthcare, or should modern genetic practices remain distinct?
These debates will challenge perspectives, spark innovation, and shape the future of genomic policy in Africa!
Stay Tuned for the Live Debate Session!
Date: Saturday, February 22, 2025.
Time: 03:00 PM Cairo Time.
This is a unique opportunity to engage with Africa’s future leaders in genetics and genomics as they debate key issues that will shape policy and scientific advancements across the continent.
