Vikram Chand: What will define the 21st century?
Vikram Chand, Vice President, Global Franchise Head at AstraZeneca, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“What will define the 21st century?
You could say the 15th century was marked by exploration. The 18th century by enlightenment and revolution. The 19th by industry… As we’re now about a quarter of the way through it, I’d like to think the 21st century could be defined, at least in part, by medical transformation.
As recently as the 1990s, cancer treatment for any given patient may have involved chemotherapy or radiation, or perhaps surgery if identified early enough. Today, we can examine and use the biology of a patient’s tumor to inform their individual treatment plan. We have innovative treatment options – like targeted therapies for specific tumor mutations, immunotherapies that can harness a patient’s immune system to mount an anti-tumor response, and antibody drug conjugates that can more precisely target cancerous cells. Not to mention improved methods of prevention and early detection.
Already these developments have drastically transformed treatment and survival expectations for people with cancer. If we were able to make such a leap in ~25 years, what could be possible in another 75?
I’m optimistic. I’m proud to be part of a company that has and continues to contribute to this progress AstraZeneca – on days like World Cancer Day last week and every day. And I’m deeply grateful to my teams for their efforts in 2024. Now looking forward to a busy 2025!”
