Marlene Mumukunde: The patient navigation project successfully provided care coordination for approximately 1354 women battling breast and cervical cancers

Marlene Mumukunde, Project Coordinator at the

“In 2020, out of the 2.3 million women who died prematurely from cancer, 72% occurred in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). This resulted in over 1 million children losing their mothers, with 83% of these cases again happening in LMICs.

The patient navigation project, a collaborative effort between the Rwanda Biomedical Centre, City Cancer Challenge, and AllMedical Inc., successfully provided care coordination for approximately 1354 women battling breast and cervical cancers. Women who received the navigation support began their treatment journeys earlier compared to those who did not, increasing their chances of recovery.

This remarkable achievement is attributed to the tireless dedication of five navigators stationed at the country’s five cancer centers. These navigators were a constant source of support, offering emotional guidance, and counseling, thus alleviating the daunting healthcare journey for these women.

We are thrilled to witness the Rwanda Biomedical Centre’s ongoing commitment to ensure that cancer patients receive the comprehensive support they need while navigating the complex healthcare system. It was an immense privilege to showcase the impact of the project and share our learnings at the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC2023) and the London Global Cancer Week (LGCW2023).

Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this project a reality! Let’s continue working together to prevent millions of female preventable cancer deaths and its associated effects on children.”
