Onyinye Balogun: As I reflect on “United by Unique”, I am reminded of my aunt
Onyinye Balogun, Co-Founder of Mission-Driven Tech, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“As I reflect on ‘United by Unique,’ the theme for World Cancer Day, I am reminded of my aunt, Miranda. A vibrant young mother in her 30s, she died too soon due to breast cancer. I think about the multiple voids her death left.
I mourn the memories I never created with her. Yet I am filled with gratitude that I can daily channel my grief into helping other individuals through their journeys with cancer.
Through ‘United by Unique’, Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) encourages us to remember that ‘behind every diagnosis lies a unique human story’ and that ‘a people-centred approach to cancer care that fully integrates each individual’s unique needs, with compassion and empathy, leads to the best health outcomes.’
This World Cancer Day, let’s recognize the power of our unique stories – not just in remembrance, but in driving change.
Throughout this week, I’ll be sharing more about my work in global (radiation) oncology, from building capacity and advancing research to tackling inequities. How do you channel your unique experience with cancer into positive action?”
