Johanna Joyce: the Flashlight method
Johanna Joyce, Professor at University of Lausanne, made the following post on LinkedIn:
“Want to try a great way to start your meetings – that really enhances group dynamics and discussion?
Its called the Flashlight method – a virtual ‘flashlight’ is passed randomly from one person to the next and everyone takes a turn to share something from the past week..
It can be anything:
- something positive that you want to share – like an exciting result or experience like going to a conference
- something you want to get feedback on – for example, a challenging experiment or surprising result
- some personal news you would like to share with the group
We’ve seen big positives since we started doing this – while we already had lots of discussion at our lab meetings, now everyone is getting involved – asking questions, sharing advice, opinions etc..
Give it a try – would love to hear how it goes for you!”
