Rachael Gormley: The Role of Investment and National Plans in Reducing the Cancer Burden

Rachael Gormley, CEO of World Cancer Research Fund, shared on LinkedIn:

“Prevention must be at the heart of what we do if we are to reduce the global cancer burden. Approximately 40 per cent of cancer cases worldwide are preventable, which is a truly astonishing statistic. That is why I was so honoured to be invited recently to be a participant in a pivotal roundtable at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos.

The event entitled ‘Blueprints for Better Outcomes: The Role of Investment and National Plans in Reducing the Cancer Burden’, gave participants a chance to come together and discuss the challenges and massive opportunities ahead. For me personally, I got an opportunity to stress the importance of putting cancer prevention at the core of cancer care and research globally.

At World Cancer Research Fund, we have been at the forefront of cancer prevention for many years.  We have developed 10 Cancer Prevention Recommendations, grounded in rigorous scientific evidence, which serve as a blueprint for individuals and societies to reduce cancer risk.

We have meticulously aligned these recommendations with actionable policy frameworks applicable to any nation, underscoring the universal applicability of these preventive measures.

I am pleased to announce that we are launching a webinar this Wednesday to delve deeper into these recommendations and discuss how health systems around the world can implement them.  We welcome all stakeholders, policymakers, and public health professionals to join us in this critical dialogue, so please do register and be a part of the discussion.

I want to extend my gratitude to Foreign Policy [Foreign Policy] and their partners Pfizer [Pfizer] and the Pfizer Foundation for hosting this session and to the Union for International Cancer Control for their continuing support of WCRF’s cancer prevention initiatives.  Together, we can make significant strides in reducing the global cancer burden. ”
