Lucy Ejeh: The Unseen Enemy – A Mother’s Brave Fight Against Lung Cancer

Lucy Ejeh, Medical House Officer at Jos University Teaching Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The Unseen Enemy: A Mother’s Brave Fight Against Lung Cancer

I still remember the day my mother’s persistent cold turned into a life-altering diagnosis. It was 2004, and our world was turned upside down when the doctor uttered the words “lung cancer.” At first, we thought it was just another bout of pneumonia.

The diagnosis shook our family to its core, leaving us reeling with uncertainty.

As a child, I had always known my mother to be strong, resilient, and full of life.

She was the rock that held our family together, the guiding light that illuminated our path. But lung cancer was a formidable opponent, one that tested her strength, her courage, and her resolve. The months that followed were a blur of hospital admissions, chemotherapy sessions, and endless hope on God.

My mother’s once-lustrous hair fell out, her body weakened, and her spirit was battered.

As I watched my mother battle this unseen enemy, I realized that lung cancer was not just a disease; it was a thief, stealing away moments, memories, and lives. It was a cruel reminder that life is precious, fleeting, and fragile.

My mother’s brave fight against lung cancer lasted eight long, arduous months. In the end, it was not the cancer that defeated her, but the toll it took on her body, her spirit, and her will to live, but her legacy etched in our hearts forever.

In these few months of internship, I have come to realize that my mother’s story is not unique. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. In 2022, there was an established 2.5 M cases and 1.8 M deaths.

While smoking is the leading cause of approximately 85% of all cases,- WHO

But my mother’s story has also taught me that there is hope, that there is a way to fight back against this unseen enemy.

It starts with awareness, with education, and with prevention. Check in the comment section below
It starts with understanding the risks Factors, the signs, and the symptoms. Check in the comment section below
Its tarts with taking control of our lives, our health, and our well-being.

Twenty (20) years down the line, I am reminded that lung cancer may have taken her life, but it will not take away her legacy.

Her story will continue to inspire, to educate, and to motivate others to take action against this disease.

In her memory, I urge you to take control of your health, to prioritize prevention, and to support those affected by lung cancer.

Together, we can create a world where no one has to face this unseen enemy alone.

Have you joined our community yet???”
