Sachin H. Jain: The Cost Implications of Clinical Documentation Improvement
Sachin H. Jain, President and CEO of SCAN Group and Health Plan, shared on LinkedIn:
“Many of the early uses of artificial intelligence (AI) focus on clinical documentation improvement.
The underlying purpose of clinical documentation improvement is improving reimbursement or risk adjustment associated revenues.
What happens when these types of technologies become ubiquitous?
Who pays for the bigger bill that will come from provider organizations that become elite billers with the support of technology?
Patients through higher out of pocket costs?
Employers through higher insurance premiums?
Health plans with higher medical loss ratios?
The government through higher payments to plans and subsequently providers?
All of the above?
In the short term, it seems AI is set to massively increase overall healthcare costs.
(To be clear, the benefits in reduced documentation time for clinician are awesome and very needed!)”
