“European Medical Organisations Unite Against Health Workforce Crisis
The health workforce in Europe is at a breaking point. Recent OECD data highlights a shortage of 1.2 million healthcare professionals in 2022, with over a third of doctors across EU countries set to retire by 2030.
Eight European Medical Organisations, including the European Junior Doctors Association, have adopted a joint policy to tackle this pressing issue.
Together, we call for:
Adequate staffing and workload management
Improved working conditions to support well-being
Investment in high-quality medical education and training
The crisis is not just about retirements. It’s a complex challenge driven by rising healthcare demands, the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and evolving expectations for healthcare delivery.
Shortages lead to excessive work hours, burnout, and compromised patient care, while taking a toll on the physical and mental health of doctors.
It’s time for coordinated action. Robust retention strategies and better working conditions are critical to prevent migration and attrition, ensuring sustainable healthcare for all.
