Arif Kamal: The definition of “bravery”
Arif Kamal, Chief Patient Officer for the American Cancer Society, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I recently shared with my 7-year-old son the definition of “bravery”.
It’s doing something even when you know the task will be difficult.
Last September, with the guidance of our colleagues at the The White House Biden Cancer Moonshot (pictured is Danielle Carnival, PhD) and the transformative leadership of my team in Shanthi Sivendran and Bonny Morris, we created a modern, CMS guidance-aligned, navigation training and credentialing program called American Cancer Society Leadership in Oncology Navigation (LION) Program.
We went from conceptualization in September 2023 to launch in January 2024 — leaning into velocity because reaching the moon requires rockets, not wheelbarrows.
And now we’ve trained, credentialed, and helped build the capacity for thousands of cancer navigators who meet people where they are and get them to where they want to go.
Recently, we joined colleagues in the Eisenhower Building at the White House to celebrate the monumental steps forward with CMS billing codes for non-clinical navigation. Celebrating with Dr. Harold Freeman (the father of navigation) and dozens of other leaders who form this critical navigation community was incredibly special.”
Arif Kamal is the first-ever Chief Patient Officer for the American Cancer Society and drives efforts to advance cancer care. With experience at Duke University and the Duke Cancer Institute, he is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Population Health. He is also a Co-Founder of Prepped Health. Dr. Kamal’s expertise lies in oncology quality assessment, palliative care, and innovative technology solutions for patient engagement.
