Cancer is the leading cause of death among the US Hispanic population – Bella Pompa

Check out our most recent article from the Sophia Kamran lab published today in JAMA Oncology!

Although Hispanic individuals generally have lower cancer incidence than non-Hispanic White individuals, cancer is the leading cause of death among the US Hispanic population.

We evaluated cancer mortality trends from 1999-2020 by age, gender, cancer type, and US region among Hispanic individuals using the CDC WONDER database. We found that overall cancer-specific mortality decreased over 2 decades for Hispanic individuals, but rates of liver cancer deaths among Hispanic men and women and pancreas and uterine cancer deaths among Hispanic women increased. We also found disparities in cancer specific mortality rates among age groups and US regions.
Strategies addressing systemic and cultural inequities are needed to address these concerning cancer mortality trends.
