Piers Blombery: Over the past 5 years we’ve been building a genetic haematology clinical service at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre/The Royal Melbourne Hospital
Piers Blombery, a hematologist at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, recently shared on LinkedIn:
“Over the past 5 years we’ve been building a genetic haematology clinical service at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre/The Royal Melbourne Hospital.
It was really satisfying to see the amazing Lucy Fox describing the journey at Blood2023 on Sunday. There have been many people and funding bodies involved along the way that have been critical to making this service a reality including Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision, Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision Centre of Research Excellence in Bone Marrow Biology, Snowdome Foundation, Wilson Centre for Blood Cancer Genomics and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
Was also really great to hear Nicole den Elzen explain the role of the genetic counsellor in this service and the specific issues that haematology genetic counselling involves. Such a fundamental contribution to the care we provide and also identified by patients and doctors as one of the major benefits of such a service. Shout out to all our current and former GCs – Laura Barth, Anna Jarmolowicz and Erin Goode – the work you do is amazing!
Importantly, this service has been developed within an evidenced-based health-implementation framework (the EMBRACE study) in order that we can have the best chance of meeting the needs of this complex patient group. Lucy Fox will be presenting this work at #ASH this year as an oral presentation – so if you are coming to ASH.. put it in your program!”
