“Women Leading Change in Oncology. Global Medical Knowledge Alliance Secures Support from the European Cancer Community Foundation, European Cancer Organisation.
Every day, Ukrainian women in oncology face the challenges of saving lives, managing stress, battling burnout, and navigating gender biases in the workplace. Yet, through initiatives by the Global Medical Knowledge Alliance (GMKA), we are working to transform these realities.
We are thrilled to announce that the initiative Supporting Women in Oncology in Ukraine. Addressing Burnout and Enhancing Well-being Among Surgeons, Oncologists, and Radiation Oncologists, led by GMKA’s Executive Director and oncologic surgeon Inesa Huivaniuk, has been awarded a prestigious grant from the European Cancer Community Foundation/European Cancer Organization.
This innovative program, showcased at the European Cancer Summit 2024 by Maksym Horiachok , is designed to address burnout, enhance workplace satisfaction, and cultivate leadership among women oncologists in Ukraine.
What is This Work About?
The initiative supports women surgeons, oncologists, and radiation oncologists by addressing workplace challenges, enhancing psychological resilience, and paving the way for career advancement.
Key Insights
Based on a GMKA survey of 340 women in surgery, including oncologic surgery:
- 80% experienced gender discrimination at work.
- 59% postponed motherhood due to work conditions.
- 54% lacked support in choosing surgical specialties.
- 49% reported no women in leadership roles in their institutions.
These factors, compounded by the ongoing war, lead to burnout, dissatisfaction, and compromised patient care.
How Will the Program Help?
With the support of the European Cancer Community Foundation, GMKA will:
- Conduct surveys and interviews to assess burnout and workplace challenges.
- Launch a mentorship program connecting young professionals with experienced mentors.
- Organize workshops on stress management and psychological resilience.
- Offer leadership training to empower women to achieve executive roles and advocate for gender equity.
Expected Outcomes
The project aims to:
– Reduce burnout among women in oncology.
– Improve job satisfaction and workplace inclusivity.
– Foster leadership development and career growth.
This initiative is a transformative step for Ukrainian women in medicine, enabling them to thrive professionally and improve the quality of oncology care nationwide.
