Sania Nishtar: Mali’s historic introduction of the HPV vaccine
Sania Nishtar, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Mali’s introduction of the HPV vaccine is a historic step to protect against the second-most common cancer among Malian women. Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance is working closely with UNICEF and World Health Organization to support the Ministry of Health’s vital efforts to prevent cervical cancer.”
Emily Kobayashi, Head of the HPV Vaccines Program at Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, shared this post, adding:
“Why is the introduction of the HPV vaccine in Mali historic?
The government’s commitment to protecting future generations from cervical cancer, despite pressing security challenges, is historic because it will serve as a model for governments that are yet to introduce, many of which are also facing ongoing conflict.
As the global HPV community, we will need to be innovative and share lessons about how to reach girls in fragile settings, drawing from subnational experiences in similar contexts, approaches to childhood vaccination in conflict settings (particularly ZeroDose), and potentially new ways of delivering this vaccine to reach girls where they are.”
