Kevin Mahoney: Nursing Recognition Awards
Kevin Mahoney, Chief Executive Officer at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, shared on LinkedIn:
“More than 11,000 nurses work across Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System to answer the institution’s life-saving charge. Recently, we celebrated 55 nurses who represent a profound dedication to excellence in clinical care practice, research, education or administration during the Nursing Recognition Awards. The annual ceremony was sponsored by the Penn Medicine Chief Nursing Officer Council.
Nursing is an extraordinary profession that requires equal parts skill, courage and compassion. Through their work, nurses see happiness, heartbreak and all of the moments in between. They may be called to watch over the most vulnerable patients. Other times, nurses take the role of advocate, coach or companion. At every step, they make a difference for our patients and their families.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, nurses were pivotal in ensuring the health system remained afloat. They worked across every part of our organization: at the bedside, comforting frightened patients with COVID-19; conducting tests at drive-through sites; delivering vaccines to patients’ homes; and much more. As we’ve emerged from the global health crisis, the practice of medicine has been reshaped, and nurses continue to help the field adjust. Our institution remains dedicated to making sure they have opportunities to learn, grow and excel in their profession.
This commitment is outlined in the Penn Medicine five-year strategic plan, which details paths for strengthening the clinician experience and helping people move into their careers faster, less expensively and more flexibly. On behalf of the countless families we help today and the many more who will need our institution tomorrow: Thank you, nurses.”
