Anjali Sibley: Addressing cancer disparities is part of elevated cancer care

Anjali Sibley, Medical Director at Stanford Emeryville Cancer Center, shared on LinkedIn:

“Addressing cancer disparities is part of elevated cancer care. I would like to highlight activities at the Stanford Cancer Institute and Stanford Healthcare and the Cancer Support Community – SF Bay Area that are actively focusing on cancer disparities in African-American patients. These activities are turning words into action!

Breast cancer incidence is lower in Black women but mortality is higher. Women must know their bodies and their risks. Dr. Candice Thompson is hosting a free, highly informative monthly educational series in Oakland on breast health and breast cancer screening and management. This initiative is in partnership with Touch, the Black Breast Cancer Alliance, in Alameda County.

Dr. Anjali Sibley in partnership with Dr. Alice Fan and colleagues at Stanford Cancer Institute are enrolling Black Men with prostate cancer or a history of prostate cancer in an exciting program, the BOOM Heart Study, that provides men with psychological support and cardiovascular screening and support. Prostate cancer occurs with higher frequency in Black men; cancer diagnoses can be stressful, life-altering situations. In addition we know that androgen deprivation treatments, that improve survival in prostate cancer, can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Men need additional support. We are happy to provide this!

Another fantastic initiative that is providing supportive care is through the Cancer Support Community-SF Bay Area. As a Cancer Support Community Board member, I am excited to share our latest community report “Health Equity in Supportive Care for Black Cancer Patients” which is part of our strategic effort to improve cancer care for all communities.
