Aaron Sverdlov: The Right Heart in Patients with Cancer
Aaron Sverdlov, Professor and Director of Heart Failure and Co-Director at Newcastle Centre of Excellence in Cardio-Oncology, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I’m excited to share two international scientific statements, by the Heart Failure Association(HFA) of the ESC and the ESC Council of Cardio-Oncology, published in the latest European Society of Cardiology European Journal of Heart Failure, that I had the privilege of co-authoring with a team of international experts:
“The Right Heart in Patients with Cancer” – highlights the critical but often-overlooked issue of right heart dysfunction in cancer patients. With increased awareness and tailored approaches, we aim to improve cardiovascular care for patients undergoing cancer treatment, addressing a complex interplay of cancer therapies, complications, and right heart health.
“Cardiovascular Toxicities of Immune Therapies for Cancer” – Immune-based cancer therapies like ICIs and CAR-T cells have revolutionized treatment, but they bring their own set of cardiovascular challenges, including myocarditis, arrhythmias, and atherosclerosis. This paper reviews the pathophysiology, detection, and management of these toxicities, offering clinicians practical insights to navigate these risks while preserving life-saving cancer treatments.
Together, these publications underscore the need for an interdisciplinary approach in Cardiooncology, integrating real-time data, advanced imaging, and proactive patient management to reduce cardiovascular risks associated with cancer treatments.

Thank you to all the co-authors and leads for these important documents for making these efforts possible. Still a lot to do to improve cardiovascular outcomes for patients with cancer.”
