“The Power of Serendipity.
One day in the library, I found myself curious about the difference between prokaryotes (single-celled organisms) and eukaryotes (multicellular organisms). By chance, the very next day, Professor G. Shanmugham, a renowned cancer biologist and exceptional teacher, asked this exact question in our cell biology class.
With around 50 brilliant students in the class, I was surprised to be the one who knew the answer simply because I’d studied it the day before.
Professor Shanmugham was impressed, especially given my background from a lesser-known college. He offered me an opportunity to work in his prestigious cancer biology lab for my master’s thesis—a chance that would go on to change my life forever.
Sometimes, it’s the smallest moments of curiosity that lead to the biggest changes. Thank you, Prof. Shanmugham. Though you are no longer with us, I am grateful every day.”

Sendurai A. Mani is an Indian-American oncologist and molecular biologist. Currently holding the Dean’s Chair for Translational Oncology at Brown University Warren Alpert Medical School, Dr. Mani also serves as the Associate Director for Translational Oncology at the Legorreta Cancer Center at Alpert Medical School.
Dr. Mani’s research focuses on finding the mechanisms driving cancer metastasis and therapy resistance, particularly in breast cancer. He is renowned for his discovery of cancer stem cells and their role in tumor progression and treatment resistance.
