Renate H. Myles has been selected as the NIH Associate Director for Communications and Public Liaison and Director of the NIH Office of Communications and Public Liaison.

Since April 2021, she has served in this role on an acting basis while also continuing her position as NIH OCPL’s Deputy Director for Public Affairs, a role she has held since November 2018. Myles has been with NIH OCPL since March 2011, progressing through various leadership roles.

In her capacity as Director, Myles leads NIH’s comprehensive communications and public liaison efforts, ensuring clear and effective communication across the agency’s 27 institutes and centers, as well as with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). She is the primary advisor to the NIH director and other senior leadership, providing guidance on complex communication issues.

Throughout her tenure, Myles has been instrumental in shaping data-driven strategies across digital, social, and print platforms, reaching billions annually. She played a pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic, coordinating NIH’s communication efforts related to research and ensuring staff safety while maintaining operations. Additionally, Myles has led efforts to align strategic communications across NIH, enhancing coordination and the effectiveness of the agency’s outreach.

Before her leadership at NIH, Myles served as a Communications Program Manager at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), where she led communications for several strategic scientific initiatives. She also has a background in public relations consulting and corporate communications for a global aerospace, automotive, and IT company in North America.

Myles holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from Auburn University and an MBA from George Washington University. Her leadership and contributions have been invaluable to NIH, and her permanent appointment will continue to benefit the agency as it advances its communication strategies and initiatives.
