Francisco J. Esteva: Will AI replace Oncologists?
Francisco J. Esteva, Director of Breast Cancer Translational Research for the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Will AI replace Oncologists?
The American Society of Clinical Oncology, ASCO has laid out six guiding principles to ensure AI is used responsibly and ethically in this field.
Transparency is crucial. AI tools must be clear in their operations, limitations, and updates. This openness builds trust and ensures that both patients and clinicians are well-informed about AI’s role in their care.
Equity and fairness are non-negotiable. AI must be designed to avoid bias and be accessible to everyone, regardless of demographic or socioeconomic status, to prevent worsening health disparities.
Accountability is key. AI systems must adhere to all legal and ethical standards, with developers taking responsibility for the decisions made by these systems.
Human-centered application is essential. While AI can enhance healthcare, it should never replace the human touch, especially in interactions that require empathy and understanding.
These principles aim to harness AI’s potential in oncology while safeguarding against misuse and bias, ultimately enhancing patient care and decision-making.
How do you see these principles influencing the future of AI in healthcare?”
