Sachin Jain: We are often destined to disappoint our mentors
“No one talks about it.
But we are often destined to disappoint our mentors (or be disappointed by them).
Why?
A Difference in World View
We ultimately evolved in a different time and see the world through different lenses/value systems than they do.
Divergent Paths
We may choose a different path for ourselves than the one recommended by our mentors.
Misattribution of Credit
We often operate with different perspectives on our relative contribution to the success of jointly created work.
Competition
Working in the same space, we might have ideas or perspectives that are competitive to a mentor’s ideas.
Misaligned Expectations
Mentors and mentees often have misaligned, non-explicit expectations of the terms implicit in a mentor/mentee relationship.
How did you disappoint a mentor?
Or experience disappointment yourself?”
