Roupen Odabashian: Why Healthcare costs are rising?
Roupen Odabashian, Internal Medicine Physician and Hematology/Oncology Fellow at Karmanos Cancer Institute, shared on LinkedIn:
“Why Healthcare costs are rising?
Yesterday, I had a discussion with a physician colleague about the escalating costs in our healthcare system. I was surprised to learn that transferring a patient via ambulance from a hospital to a nursing home or rehabilitation center can cost $5,000 – for just a one-hour ride.
This fee exemplifies a broader issue: the unchecked greed and excessive charging practices prevalent in our healthcare system. The absence of proper capitation and payment regulation has led to a system where costs are disconnected from patient outcomes.
I firmly believe that all healthcare payments should be outcome-based and patient-centered. Transferring a patient between facilities is a necessary service, but charging $5,000 for it is, in my professional opinion, unjustifiable.”
