Highlights from SIOP 2024 Congress
The 56th Congress of the ‘Société Internationale d’Oncologie Pédiatrique’ (SIOP) was held from October 17-20, 2024, in Honolulu, Hawaii, US.
The SIOP 2024 annual congress in Hawaii represented an exciting milestone for the organization. Hosting the event in the United States offered a unique opportunity to receive valuable contributions from North American colleagues and institutions, including the Children’s Oncology Group. Additionally, the congress’s proximity to South-East Asia and Oceania enriched the event with the expertise and perspectives from these dynamic regions. Attendees also experienced the unique charm of Hawaii as a host destination.
As always, the scientific program covered a wide range of global pediatric oncology topics, with a particular emphasis on research from cooperative groups participating in the PARC programme. A comprehensive agenda was developed to address global health topics and highlight updates related to the WHO Global Initiative on Childhood Cancer, where SIOP held the distinction of being a recognized non-state actor.
The SIOP 2024 Congress was the place to hear the latest research findings in the field and to catalyze new ideas, generated by the multi-disciplinary attendance for which it was renowned. It provided a wonderful platform to present research, share knowledge, and foster collaborations. Attendees had the opportunity to advance their pediatric oncology careers, connect with like-minded professionals, and contribute to a world where no child should die of cancer.

“My first two days at the SIOP Congress are always dedicated to attending the SIOP Board of Directors meeting, an intense yet deeply rewarding experience. These sessions are focused on strategic discussions, knowledge sharing, and making critical decisions that drive the growth and mission of SIOP.
This year’s Board of Directors meeting was particularly unique, offering a fresh approach to shaping the SIOP strategy, congresses, and partnerships. As Chair of the Young SIOP Network, I was especially encouraged to see how the decision and idea will benefit young professionals within SIOP.
It is inspiring to see the dedication of the SIOP Board to nurturing the next generation of leaders, and I am excited to contribute to the momentum as we work together to transform pediatric oncology worldwide.

“Looking back at a very successful and inspiring pre- SIOP2024 multidisciplinary HARMONICA/IPSO meeting in Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu, Hawaii, including sessions on relapsed Non-Wilms tumor, Stage IV Wilms tumor, nephroblastomatosis, nephron sparing surgery, technical advances in renal surgery, surgery for metastases/relapses, and pediatric renal tumor rupture.
During the last session on Wednesday October 16, we presented an update of the SIOP-RTSG, COG-RTG and ESPR Taskforce Oncology multidisciplinary renal tumor rupture project. Although we are not yet there, it nicely illustrated how global multidisciplinary collaboration can improve clinical care for children with renal tumors.

The day 4 of the SIOP congress concluded with my oral presentation, where I shared data from the analysis of more than 3,300 abstracts. Imagine 84% of accepted abstracts never make it to publication.
This is a crucial issue—we need to resuscitate the science in pediatric oncology. People should publish, and science must go on. Urgent action is needed!
