Jennifer Bires: The urgent issue of Health Literacy and its impact on equitable healthcare access and treatment

Jennifer BiresExecutive Director, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“At the recent Beacon Symposium, I had the opportunity to join an incredible panel led by the inspiring Maimah Karmo, alongside Daniel B. Fagbuyi, M.D. and Michelle Anderson-Benjamin, MHA, to discuss the urgent issue of Health Literacy and its impact on equitable healthcare access and treatment.

We emphasized the need to break down the stigma surrounding health literacy—it’s not about intelligence, but about patients getting information in a way they can understand it. We also highlighted the critical role of support from individuals who share your lived experiences, and explored potential solutions to bridge these gaps.

One key solution is patient navigation and better integrating advocacy organizations, like Tigerlily Foundation and their Angel Advocate program, into healthcare systems. Additionally, we examined the potential of AI in healthcare—while it offers great promise, if not carefully implemented, it could widen health equity gaps instead of closing them.

Tigerlily Foundation is truly moving the needle on equitable cancer care, empowering patients and pushing society and healthcare systems to do better.

Health literacy isn’t just an individual challenge—it’s a systemic issue. Together, we must push for solutions that bridge the gaps and create a more equitable healthcare system for all.”
