Roupen Odabashian: I can’t stop using ChatGPT or AI to delegate mentally draining tasks to it

Roupen Odabashian, Hematology and Oncology Fellow at

“Many people use ChatGPT for reading X-rays, but I believe its medical uses extend beyond X-ray interpretation.

I can’t stop using ChatGPT or AI to delegate mentally draining tasks to it. In my training as a haematologist, one of the common conditions we encounter is thrombocytopenia, which is characterized by a low platelet count. Many patients who get admitted to the hospital with severe illnesses may suffer from this.

This is one of the conditions where the causes could be numerous, and it is challenging to pinpoint the exact reason. However, one common culprit is medication.

Most of the patients in the hospital are on many medications that can lead to a low platelet count. When we review the patients’ medications, it becomes a very time-consuming process to look into different medications and Google each one of them to see which one is the cause. But another option is to use ChatGPT.

I asked ChatGPT to help me find which medication can lead to a low platelet count, and it did a great job in narrowing down the medications list and identifying the suspected drugs, pinpointing some of the possible culprit medications. Although, non of the medications I think would be specific cause of the patients thrombocytopenia but it is interesting to see what AI can do in helping physicians with clinical decision-making.”
